Migratory birds see 48 percent rise at Sukhna Lake: Census

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Bird Club has detected 620 migratory birds of 33 different species in its water fowl census and species count at Sukhna Lake, forest and Nagar Van on Monday, a rise of 48% than last year. In 2018, the count was 417 of 31 different species.
Expert Meetinder Singh Sekhon said three teams of 14 birders conducted the census after combing the area for five hours.The experts spotted various birds at Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sekhon said the increase in numbers could be because of development of Nagar Van area on more scientific lines and improvements in biotope. A total of 86 different species has been detected at the forest reserve this year, which were 91 species in 2017 and 98 in 2018.
Recently, rare species of birds, Oriental Pied Hornbill was spotted at the Sukhna Wildlife Reserve in Chandigarh. The bird has been spotted at Sukhna Nagar Van during a bird walk organised by Chandigarh Bird Club.
In February, bird lovers had spotted 209 different species of birds during a bird race in Chandigarh and adjoining forest reserves. The bird lovers also found rare species of Southern Grey Shrike and Brown Bullfinch as birds of the day.
