CHANDIGARH: Unhygienic water supply in various parts Manimajra has led to the spurt in diarrhoea cases in the area in the past two days. As many as 25 such cases came to the fore on Wednesday while 12 more were reported till Thursday afternoon. According to civic authorities, the problem could be due to supply by water tanker. Doctors at the Manimajra civil hospital have confirmed that the number of cases have doubled in the past two days.
Mohammad Nazir, a resident of the area, suddenly developed an upset stomach on Wednesday night. Anwari, his wife, said, "The problem started on Wednesday night and we immediately rushed to civil hospital. He had not consumed anything from outside. Several other residents of the area are also suffering from the same problem."
Dr Arun Bansal, in charge of Manimajra civil hospital, said, "From the past two days we have been receiving a large number of diarrhoea cases while 25 such cases were received on Wednesday only. As it is a water-borne disease, the situation can turn serious if precautions are not taken."
Area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kala, who reported the matter to mayor and engineering wing of the MC on Thursday, said, "The problem is worse in many areas of my ward and I have reported the matter to the authorities. However, they claim that there is no problem with the water supply from tube wells. It can be due to the supply through water tankers."
Rajinder Singh Ahluwalia, executive engineer of the health wing of the MC, said, "We have started a drive in the area, but found the water potable. We will again run a drive in the evening to trace the problem, if any."
