Man ‘kills’ daughter over secret marriage

CHANDIGARH: A student of BCom (second year) was allegedly murdered by her father and other family members after she told them that she had secretly married against their wish. Police said she was murdered on Sunday night at her family house in Ballah village under Assandh sub-division of Karnal. The accused also cremated the body before police could be alerted.
Acting on the complaint of her husband Monu Kumar, police have registered the case of murder against Jyoti’s family at Assandh police station.

Her father also allegedly threatened to kill Monu who inquired about her on Sunday.
Assandh station house officer (SHO) Virender Sharma said forensic experts had collected samples from the cremation ground. At the same time, police parties were conducting raids at the residence of the girl arrest the accused, he said.
“We are verifying the facts of the case. We are expecting the report from forensic experts soon. Let kin of the girl join the investigations so that we can ascertain the truth behind entire incident,” he said.
Police said that Monu and Jyoti belonged to same community. Monu is a resident of Makdoli Kalan village of Rohtak. They had come in contact with each other through social media and had got married on March 14, in a temple in Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh.
The two expected to persuade their parents to accept their marriage in due course of time so concealed their relationship. Meanwhile, Jyoti had started taking her BCom exams.
On May 24, Jyoti had taken her last exam. Monu told police that he was in touch with her till June 2 afternoon and both of them had decided to disclose their marriage to the family.
Jyoti told her family about the marriage and was beaten up on Saturday, alleged Monu, adding that since then he had been unable to reach her. He called Jyoti’s father, who claimed to have killed her and threatened him with dire consequences, said police.
