YAMUNANAGAR: The police have arrested a man allegedly for hurting religious sentiments by posting objectionable comments on social media against Sikh Gurus and
Sikh community.
The accused has been identified as Gaurav Pandit of Haibatpur village in Yamunanagar district, who was produced in the court on Wednesday. The court sent Pandit to judicial custody, said the police.
Irked over the delay in the arrest of accused Pandit, a group of Sikhs held a protest outside Jagadhri Sadar police station on Wednesday from 10 am to 12 noon.
During the protest, some representatives of Sikhs were called inside the police station by cops and shown photos of the accused in custody of the crime investigation agency (CIA)-I.
Police sources said that the CIA-I was tasked by Yamunanagar superintendent of police (SP) Mohit Handa on Tuesday late night to arrest accused Gaurav, which successfully arrested him.
The protesting Sikhs alleged that the police did not show arrest of the accused person even after passage of over a week, therefore, they planned to protest outside the police station.
On the complaint of Sukhjinder Singh of Mehlan Wali village in Yamunanagar district accompanied by a group of Sikhs, the police had registered a case against Gaurav Pandit under Section 294 (obscene acts or songs), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion), 295-A (deliberate or malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 67A (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act) of the Information Technology (IT) Act at Jagadhri Sadar police station on April 26, 2023.
Sukhjinder stated to the police, "Accused Gaurav Pandit is posting content full of disrespect for Sikh religion and says that they will blast Gurudwara and Sikh community with bomb. The accused is saying that the incident of sacrilege that took place in Morinda (Gurdwara Kotwali Sahib), Punjab is correct and that this happened good. Accused said that the assault with granthi (priest) in Gurudwara is also correct and such things should continue to happen with them (Sikhs).”
Jagadhri Sadar police station house officer (SHO) Kusum Bala said, "Accused was arrested on Wednesday and produced in the court which sent him to judicial custody. Further investigation is being done."
