CHANDIGARH: Commenting for the first time on a political issue in the state, former Union minister for sports and Rajya Sabha member from Punjab M S Gill on Friday slammed the possible candidature of former cop Mohammad Azhar Alam, albeit without naming him.
Gill hails from Tarn Taran, which was a part of Amritsar district when Alam was the district police chief.
Alam's tenure in Amritsar has remained in controversy due to reports about existence of 'Alam Sena', which allegedly indulged in false encounters of Sikh youths.
"Since Punjab elections are round the corner, I am dismayed to read about a former police officer, who now hopes to become a representative of the people in the assembly. The area people have still not forgotten the horror stories of this officer who worked for long in Amritsar district. Their memories are still raw, and it would be most amazing if he is put forward as a representative of people," Gill said in a carefully-worded statement.
Now, an RS member after he was dropped from the Union cabinet after a reshuffle, Gill's tenure in Rajya Sabha is till 2016.
