Kinana sarpanch Kavita Devi said women had been facing domestic issues due to the liquor consumption. "The liquor vend was located in the village proximity, but officials have shifted it away after villagers protested for six days straight. To prevent village youths from consuming alcohol, an awareness programme would also be launched," she added.

Villagers said it was disheartening to struggle for closure of wine shops. "The government is promoting liquor rather than welcoming our resolve. Most of the villagers are in favour of closure of such shops," they added.

Jind deputy commissioner Manoj Kumar said there was a rule that 10% population of any village has to give consent for removal of liquor vend along with a condition of no case of illegal supply in the village concerned.

"If we close any shop in the village, other people will supply liquor which will lead to untoward incidents. Therefore, on the demand of locals, we have shifted the liquor vend away from the village rather than shutting it down," he added.

People from other villages, including Ramkali and Jalalpur Kalan, too have been protesting to seek permanent closure of wine shops and submitted several memorandums to the administrative officials. However, officials claimed that if liquor vends were shut down, contractors would start selling the alcohol illegally.
