NEW DELHI: The Punjab Police has suspended seven officers, including two of deputy superintendent rank, following an investigation into an interview conducted with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi while he was in police custody.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Special Director General of Police (Human Rights), found that one interview took place when Bishnoi was in the custody of Punjab Police in Kharar, Mohali, and another while he was in jail in Rajasthan.
Following the findings, an order from the Punjab Home Secretary on Friday announced the suspension of SP Gursher Singh Sandhu, DSP Sammar Vaneet, Sub-Inspector Reena (CIA Kharar), Sub-Inspector Jagatpal Jangu, Sub-Inspector Shaganjit Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukhtiar Singh, and Head Constable Om Parkash.
"Keeping in view the sensitivity of the case, all the above officers have been suspended," the order mentioned.
The SIT's report indicated that Bishnoi's interview was conducted via video conference during the night of September 3 and 4, 2022. Earlier in March, a private news channel broadcast two interviews with Bishnoi, the first from the premises of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) staff in Kharar, under the jurisdiction of SAS Nagar, Mohali, and the second from Central Jail in Jaipur.
Bishnoi is also implicated in the murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, which occurred in 2022.
