AMRITSAR : Excellent performance, arousing fear in the minds of opponents, winning one match after the other brought Sarabjit Singh(name changed) to the state level.
The twenty six year old state level Kabaddi player from Amritsar had much to boast of but for his present pathetic condition.
People now shy away from the young man who was once the pride of village- thanks to drugs.
Narrating his woeful story at Opiate Substitute Therapy (OST) Centre, Sarabjit said that about four years ago he dreamt of scaling the heights.
Selection into Punjab Kabaddi team was just a step towards that direction. But the euphoria did not last long. Friends introduced him to the 'white powder'. Thrill and curiosity overpowered his rationality. He took the first snuff which pushed him into a dead end.
There was no coming back- heroin, smack and then the injections. U-turn seemed impossible. "With the drug de addication efforts I have achieved which earlier seemed impossible" he said.
Sarabjit is taking medicine from the OST centre since past few months and his will power coupled with family support and treatment has pulled him out of the vortex of drugs, says Dr.
Ravneet Kaur, incharge OST centre.
