CHANDIGARH: Just one out of six cops accused of forging signatures of seniors on warrants and summons issued by the UT district redressal forum appeared before the vigilance cell on Tuesday.

The vigilance had served notices to all the six accused cops, ASI Ashok Mallik, retired ASI Puran and four constables Rahul, Dalbir Singh, Sunil Kumar and Krishan, to join the investigation on June 19, but none of them did. On Tuesday, constable Dalbir Singh appeared before the vigilance sleuths. He was interrogated for around three hours.

Sources said the vigilance would give another chance to the five cops to join the investigation and make arrests if they fail to do so.

Sources in the vigilance said the accused cops fear they will be arrested if they appear for questioning.

Sources said all the accused cops have taken leave from the department since the FIR was registered against them on June 15. They were booked after a CFSL report confirmed that signatures on the warrants and summons were fake.

Sources said ASI Mallik was the main accused. He along with retired ASI Puran allegedly used to go for the execution of warrants and deliver summons despite them being assigned to his subordinates.

The vigilance investigation has revealed that ASI Mallik forged signatures in more than 20 summons and warrants issued by the district consumer redressal forum. He allegedly made fake reports of execution of warrants with fake signatures of investigating officers.

The forgery came to light when a judge of a consumer redressal forum summoned a cop deployed in a PO cell for non-execution of a warrant. The cop informed the judge that he did not receive this warrant for execution from munshi or any other senior of the PO cell. The cop also told the judge that the signature on the non-execution warrant was not his.
