Jind sees 37% spike in rainfall over 3 years, heavy rains batter Haryana
Jind: Continuous and intermittent heavy rainfall has severely affected daily life and agriculture across Haryana's rural heartland this year. According to official data, rainfall has been increasing annually in the region, with 2025 recording the highest levels yet.Several villages in Julana town of Jind district are grappling with waterlogging issues, while significant crop losses were reported in Hisar, Bhiwani, and Rohtak districts. In Julana alone, around 12 villages have submerged under water up to several feet, leading to the destruction of paddy crops. This year, the region received substantially more rainfall compared to the past three years. While it brought joy to farmers in some areas, it caused serious problems for low-lying and urban zones, severely impacting normal life.Data reveals that Jind district received 1,347 mm of rainfall during July and Aug in 2023, followed by 1,570 mm in the same months in 2024. As of Aug 28, 2025, the district has already recorded 1,857 mm — an 18% increase over last year and a 37% increase compared to 2023.Anil Godara, a farmer from Hisar district, said many farmers from villages such as Bass and Putthi were forced to replant paddy after their crops were damaged by excessive rainfall. He added that farmers in a few areas of Bhiwani and Rohtak faced similar situations. In addition to paddy, the cotton crop also suffered damage due to continuous rain, he said.Surajmal Nain, a farmer based in Jind, said that crops sown across thousands of acres in the state were completely damaged. However, the damage was mostly limited to low-lying areas in many districts and did not significantly affect higher areas, he said.Girish Nagpal, deputy director in the agriculture department, who is deputed in Jind district, mentioned that some villages have been struggling with waterlogging for years. He noted that while the continuous rainfall might eventually benefit paddy farmers, its true impact will only be known at the time of harvest. So far, only a few villages have reported losses due to rainfall, despite persistent issues, he added.BOX: Jind Weather WatchMonth | Rain (in mm)July 2023 | 965 August 2023 | 382 July 2024 | 531 Aug 2024 | 1,039 July 2025 | 685 Aug 2025 | 1,172 MSID:: 123565497 413 |
