CHANDIGARH: Gurgaon city has finally become Gurugram with the state government issuing a formal notification.
The notification is the final step to change the name of a city or village. "The governor of Haryana is pleased to change the name of Gurgaon city as Gurugram," stated the notification issued by Haryana additional chief secretary (revenue) Kesni Anand Arora.

The authorities also sent a copy of the document to Gurugram's deputy commissioner, who had sent a letter to the government seeking the name change on March 1. The DC has been asked to take necessary action to change the name in the records. Gurugram commissioner He has been informed about the development. A copy has also been sent to the printing and stationery department for its publication in the next issue of Haryana state official gazette. All the signboards across the city would also be changed now.
Gurugram deputy commissioner T L Satyaprakash had earlier told TOI that he had asked Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMITS) to make changes in the signboards for government offices and buildings. "As of now, we don't have much signboards in the city," the DC had stated.
The expenses on works related to the name change would be borne by the departments concerned.
According to the government, the decision to change the name was taken on the basis of representations from different quarters.
However, inquiries by TOI had revealed that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's cultural outfit Sanskar Bharti was one among the organizations which was consistently demanding the name change. Gurugram DC had confirmed that Sanskar Bharti, Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Shrine Board and municipal councillors in the city were demanding the change.
Change in bank records too
Apart from change in the official records, Gurugram will now be printed on state transport buses, local bus stands and public and private buildings. A senior officer said that the banks would make changes in their records too. "Execution of financial transactions in banks would be difficult if people from abroad mention the old name," said an officer. "Change in the name of Bhiwani town would not have made such an impact, but Gurugram is an international city," he added.
