It's Bassi versus Sood for mayor

Chandigarh: The formal battle to clinch the municipal corporation's mayoral election has begun as the three candidates from the Congress and BJP-SAD alliance filed the nomination papers on Monday.
As expected, Mukesh Bassi, Darshan Kumar Garg and Gurbax Rawat filed papers for the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor from the Congress.Arun Sood, Davesh Moudgil and Hardeep Singh would be their contenders from the BJP-SAD alliance.
BJP-SAD alliance candidates were the first to file nomination papers at the office of joint municipal commissioner Rajiv Gupta around 12noon. Former union minster Harmohan Dhawan, MP Kirron Kher and BJP local president Sanjay Tandon were present along with municipal councillors of BJP-SAD except Satparkash Aggarwal. Aggarwal had to go out of station due to the death of one of his relatives.
At 3pm, Congress candidates Bassi, Garg and Rawat filed their nomination papers. Former union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, Congress local president Pradeep Chhabra and all Congress councillors were present.
A number of supporters of both the parties were present in the office of the joint municipal commissioner.
"All the forms have been rightly filled. There is no error. Now presiding officer Babulal will conduct the mayoral elections on January 8 as per laid down process and procedure," said the joint municipal commissioner.
Discontent simmers in BJP
Dissatisfaction still prevailed among a few BJP councillors who were trying their level best to secure the candidature for the mayor's post. Sources said some councillors were not happy at all with the announcement of the names of the candidate, but were not saying anything in the open owing to party discipline.
