Amritsar: Two women were killed and seven others injured when iron shuttering plates collapsed at an under-construction langar hall at Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji on Sunday.
Preet Inder Singh, ACP (south), said a group of women was reciting prayers beneath the roof when the structure gave way during "sewa" (voluntary service) for the new hall around noon. Police identified the victims as Rajrani and Kulwinder Kaur. Among the injured, one remains in critical condition while another is a minor.
The ACP said police personnel, assisted by devotees and sewadars, rushed the victims to the hospital. He added that legal action will be initiated following investigation.
Harjinder Singh Dhami, president, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families. He said strong winds caused the shuttering plates to slip from the roof's framework.
Dhami said construction and service work were being managed to accommodate the heavy Sunday footfall. He visited the injured at Sri Guru Ramdas Ji Hospital, where the SGPC is providing medical treatment free of charge.
