Independent journalism essential for a healthy democracy: Anil Vij
Ambala: Haryana's energy, transport and labour minister Anil Vij on Saturday asserted that independent journalism is indispensable for a healthy democracy, warning that if even one of the four pillars—legislature, executive, judiciary or the media—weakens, democracy itself will be destabilised. Addressing journalists at a programme organised by the Media Well Being Association in Ambala, Vij described journalists as a vital bridge between the govt and society. He said journalists must function like CCTV cameras, keeping a sharp watch on every activity in society, conveying public concerns to the govt and taking govt achievements and welfare policies to the people. Emphasising the growing responsibility of the media in the digital age, Vij cautioned that fake news, paid news and clickbait journalism pose a serious threat to democratic values and the credibility of journalism.
