In Pics | DRDO’s High-Speed Rocket-Sled Test Propels India Into 'Elite Club' of Fighter Escape-System Nations

The DRDO achieved a major milestone by conducting a high-speed rocket-sled test simulating fighter aircraft escape conditions, validating the ability of aircrew to eject safely at extreme speeds during an in-flight emergency.

The test was executed at a precisely controlled velocity of 800 km/h, replicating real combat-level ejection forces and proving that the escape system can ensure pilot survival even during high-speed catastrophic failure.

The trial was carried out at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh — one of the world’s few dynamic escape-system test tracks with supersonic evaluation capability.

The mission saw coordinated effort between DRDO, the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the Indian Air Force, advancing India’s quest for fully indigenous aircraft safety systems.

Engineers mounted the forebody of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas on a dual-sled platform, propelled by multiple solid-propellant rocket motors in sequential phases to simulate real-aircraft escape dynamics.

The test successfully validated the full escape chain — canopy severance, ejection initiation, seat sequencing, and recovery — confirming the rapid-response mechanisms required to save a pilot during emergencies.

An instrumented anthropomorphic test dummy measured real physiological stress — including loads, acceleration and moments — to ensure the system protects pilots from lethal g-forces during high-velocity ejection.

Every millisecond of the separation and recovery sequence was captured using high-speed onboard sensors and ground-based imaging, enabling engineers to analyse canopy fragmentation, seat dynamics, and pilot-survival motion.

With this successful dynamic test, India joins an elite club of countries that possess in-house capability to evaluate fighter escape systems at high speed — a critical step towards self-reliance in military aviation safety.
