On June 8, UT home secretary Nitin Yadav had directed the police to launch a special campaign to address the issue of unclaimed and abandoned vehicles that are posing a threat to public safety.

Kanwardeep Kaur, SSP, UT, said 15 abandoned vehicles were removed on the first day of the drive. On June 11, cops from different police stations identified 76 unclaimed vehicles in the different parts of the city and told their owners to remove them. On June 12, police removed 36 abandoned vehicles from markets and parking lots. The SSP said they were hopeful of removing all unattended vehicles from the city in the next two weeks.

The UT administration and police have urged residents to report about unclaimed vehicles at 112 helpline or contact area station house officers (SHOs) directly.

During this drive, the police would identify owners of the abandoned vehicles and ask them to remove their vehicles from these locations. If the owner cannot be traced or remains unresponsive, vehicles will be taken into police custody through a seizure memo under Section 102 of the CrPC, said sources.
