Husband, in-laws booked after woman dies by suicide
Chandigarh: Police have registered a dowry death case against a man and his parents after his 26-year-old wife allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself. The police launched an investigation after verifying a complaint filed by the deceased woman’s father.
The victim was found dead on May 19, hanging from a ceiling fan in her in-laws’ house. On the day of the incident, she had served food to her family members around 11 am before heading upstairs. The situation came to light in the afternoon when a visiting plumber found the bedroom door locked from the inside, prompting the family to check through a neighbour’s property.
Following the discovery, the police were notified, and the body was moved to GMSH-16 for an autopsy. The complaint named her daughter’s husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law as the individuals responsible for the harassment that drove his daughter to suicide. He also alleged physical torture and demands for more dowry since the couple’s marriage five years ago.
Prior to the registration of the case, the in-laws had claimed that the woman took her own life because she was troubled by a long-standing heart-related illness. The police are currently investigating both the family’s initial claims and the physical torture allegations detailed in the father’s complaint.
