High court team digs out illegal de-addiction centre

A special team appointed by the Punjab and Haryana high court has unearthed an illegal de-addiction centre in Mallu Majra village of the district and rescued one of the inmates kept in illegal confinement as his family had failed to pay Rs 20,000.

PATIALA: A special team appointed by the Punjab and Haryana high court has unearthed an illegal de-addiction centre in Mallu Majra village of the district and rescued one of the inmates kept in illegal confinement as his family had failed to pay Rs 20,000.
The team consisting AIG Harpreet Singh and DSP Harwant Kaur, both members of the special task force against drugs, Dr Aditya Kaushik, amicus curiae, and district medical commissioner Dr M S Dhaliwal and Dr Rajinder Garg had carried out an inspection of Vardaan Drug De-addiction Centre.
The team members found the centre was being run without a valid licence. While the manager claimed they had 11 inmates, a search yielded a total of 35. Amandeep Singh, the inmate, alleged he was brought to the centre a few months back and even as he had been cured, the staff was not letting him leave as his family could not pay Rs 20,000 that was due.
Kaushik filed a police complaint against the staffers of the centre. A case under sections 365, 323, 342, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 82 of the Mental Health Act of 1987 was registered against the employees.They are yet to be arrested.
Kaushik said he would be filing a detailed report before the high court which might di rect the district administration to take stern action against this centre.
The administration is yet to initiate action against the centre. Deputy commissioner Kumar Amit said he has asked the chief medical officer to get details and initiate action against the centre. He said the administration would proceed as per the law and seal any such centres being run in the district.
