Haryana women’s panel vice chair arrested for bribery

Chandigarh: The Rohtak unit of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday arrested Sonia Aggarwal, vice-chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women, along with her driver. They are accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to settle a complaint against a JBT teacher.
Both accused were arrested at Sonia Aggarwal’s residence in Kharkhoda town, Sonipat district. They are currently being questioned as part of the investigation.
A case under sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS) has been registered against them at the ACB police station in Rohtak.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Sonia Aggarwal was handling a harassment complaint filed by the wife of a JBT teacher in Sonipat.
On Dec 12, the accused vice-chairperson held a hearing on the complaint, and the couple was called in for counselling. It is alleged that Kulbeer, Sonia Aggarwal’s driver and personal assistant, struck a deal with the complainant. Kulbeer arranged the time and place for handing over the payment.
However, the complainant approached the ACB and provided evidence supporting his complaint. Consequently, a raid party led by DSP Kamaljit Singh from the Jind unit was organised to lay the trap.
The ACB first arrested Kulbeer, and later the police party apprehended Sonia Aggarwal. After questioning her on the issue, the raiding party took her into custody. Sources indicated that the entire operation was conducted in the presence of a senior gazetted officer appointed as the duty magistrate.
After taking Sonia Aggarwal into custody, ACB sleuths took her to the women police station of Sonipat for further investigation. In the meantime, a team of ACB also conducted searches at Aggarwal’s house to recover case material.
