PANCHKULA/AMBALA: Three jawans were killed and 11 others injured when a grenade accidentally went off during an exercise of 111 BN of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Bhur firing range in Panchkula district on Thursday. While preliminary investigations ruled out foul play, CRPF authorities ordered a probe to ascertain if there was any negligence on the part of jawans or officers supervising them.
According to information, at around 9.30 am, a group of 14 jawans went to check four unexploded grenades they had lobbed during practice when suddenly, one of the grenades reportedly went off killing two on the spot and injuring 12, including the jawan declared brought dead at PGI, Chandigarh. "Constables Rajesh and Virender died on the spot while Suresh Chander succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. With splinter injuries all over their bodies, 11 jawans are undergoing treatment at PGI and are out of danger," said sources.
Stating that all norms for practice has been adhered to, Virender Dahiya, Panchkula SDM who rushed to the spot, said, "The team lobbed 20 grenades, out which four did not explode, but while checking them, one of them went of accidentally. All 14 jawans were in bomb-disposal gear and authorities had taken appropriate precautions like keeping fire tenders and ambulance ready to tackle any untoward incident." Recalling the sequence of events, one of the injured, Ved, reportedly narrated the entire incident to the SDM. ������Ved, who has suffered injuries in his legs, said the blast was followed by fire, smoke and splinters flying off in all directions," said Dahiya, adding that valid permission had been taken for the exercise. "The entire area was cordoned off and announcements were made through munadi (drum beatings) before the start of practice," said Dahiya. Meanwhile, CRPF officials chose to keep mum over the entire episode, the ward where jawans were admitted was declared out of bound. A DIG-level officer said, "The incident took place when jawans were trying to activate detonators to dispose of unexploded grenades.���
