Golden Temple sarvoar sacrilege: Accused remanded in police custody
Amritsar: A court here on Monday remanded Subhan Rangrez, the man accused of performing ‘wuzu' at the Golden Temple sarovar, in police remand for three days. Punjab Police had brought Rangrez to Amritsar from Ghaziabad earlier in the day. Acting on a complaint filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the police registered a case of sacrilege against him. Wuzu (or wudhu) is the Islamic ritual of purification performed before specific acts of worship, most notably the five daily prayers. It involves washing specific parts of the body with water to achieve a state of physical and spiritual readiness.

During his visit to the Golden Temple on Jan 13, Rangrez sat near the sarovar (holy pond), rinsed his mouth with the water, and spat it back into the sarovar, according to the SGPC. He also raised a finger towards Golden Temple and later moved around the temple complex while an accomplice recorded a video of his actions.On Jan 24, he was traced to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, where he was caught by Nihangs, who slapped him and later handed him over to police. He remained in Ghaziabad police custody until he was transferred to Amritsar on Monday.The incident has triggered divided the internet, with some users condemning the act and calling for action, while others alling for restraint and citing videos of Rangrez apologising.
