Former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda promises women safety to his sisters on Rakshabandhan
CHANDIGARH: Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda criticised the BJP government on Monday, stating that it has utterly failed to ensure the safety of women in the state, leading to a continuous rise in crimes against them. He pointed out that the government's own statistics reveal that Haryana tops the country in crimes against women.
“Every day, 5 cases of rape and 13 cases of kidnapping come to light and every day 46 women face some crime or the other. In the SPI report too, Haryana has been declared the most unsafe state in the country. Due to the negligence of the BJP government, thousands of women employees including Anganwadi, Asha workers, mid-day-meal workers and nursing staff are forced to take to the streets,” he said.
“For the Congress and women, this time the assembly elections have become not only an election for change of power, but also for the protection of the honour and dignity of women,” he said.
Women from across Haryana sent rakhis to Bhupinder Singh Hooda for the auspicious festival of Rakshabandhan. MLAs Geeta Bhukkal and Shakuntala Khatak also celebrated by tying rakhis to Hooda.
On this occasion, Hooda promised women's safety will be given priority when the Congress government is formed in the state. “Crime and miscreants will be wiped out from the state. To reduce inflation, LPG cylinder will be available for Rs 500 and 300 units of electricity will be free. The backlog in government jobs will be completed and the participation of women in government jobs will be increased,” he said.
“Today the law and order situation in the state has collapsed. A big reason behind the increase in crime is the youth of the state getting into the quagmire of drugs. The state government is giving protection to the drug mafia instead of catching them. Schools are being closed and liquor shops are being opened in every village, street and locality,” he said.
“The biggest brunt of the increasing drug addiction is being borne by the mothers and sisters at home. Mothers are seeing their young children die in front of their eyes and women are becoming victims of domestic violence,” he added.
Hooda assured the sisters that once the Congress government is formed in the state, they will crack down on the drug trade. He promised that Congress will focus on turning the youth into athletes, not drug addicts.
“While the BJP could neither provide security to the common women nor could it provide justice to the wrestler daughters who have brought glory to the country. Whether it is the issue of women wrestlers or women coaches, the BJP is seen standing in favor of the accused everywhere,” he pointed out.
“The BJP government also did injustice to thousands of women employees including Anganwadi, Asha workers, mid-day-meal workers and nursing staff, but when Congress government is formed in the state, the demands of these women employees will be resolved,” he promised.
