Festivities to figure in Ludhiana R-Day tableaus

LUDHIANA: The Ludhiana Republic Day will witness tableaus at the ceremonial festivities after a gap of over fifteen years on Monday. The Republic Day celebration at the Government College for Boys will host fifteen different tableaus from six departments.
The tableaus were discontinued in 1985, when the Republic day celebrations were hosted in the Guru Nanak Stadium, as the stadium was upgraded with a synthetic track, and trolleys and trucks were not allowed to roll into the track.
Later, about ten years back the celebrations moved to Government College for Boys, all the same, no one took the initiative of reviving the tableaus.
Annurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner explains that he had received a routine letter from the government’s concerned office advising each district to highlight the achievements of the government. It entailed showcasing panchayat empowerment, Aashirwad scheme, etc. Verma said this was his first Republic Day celebrations in his short stint at Ludhiana, and when he had tried to get the tableau themes implemented, he learnt how they were discontinued, and never again restarted.
The 73rd Amendment empowers the Panchayat Raj. Tableaus depicting the unanimously elected Panchayat, toilet for poor families, etc will be put up on the respective vehicles. Other tableaus showing agriculture themes like procurement, industry related issues will also roll down the pathway in the morning.
