Father arrested for murder of 7-year-old daughter

KURUKSHETRA: The district police on Tuesday arrested a man for allegedly murdering his seven-year-old daughter by throwing her in the Bhakra-Narwana canal.

Solving the case, a team of Thanesar Sadar police station arrested the accused, identified as Lalit Mahto, a migrant from Bihar state, presently residing at Kheri Markanda village of this district for some years. The accused was presented in district court on Tuesday, which granted two-day remand for further investigation.

According to a Kurukshetra police spokesperson, the case was reported on March 2, 2025, when a woman from Kheri Markanda village filed a complaint stating that her daughter had gone to school on March 1 but did not return home. He said the girl’s father had taken the child from school under the pretext of making her Adhaar card. When the girl did not return home in the evening, the mother questioned her husband, who claimed to have left their daughter with a relative at Singhu Border, Delhi. However, when the woman went to Delhi to bring her daughter back, Lalit Mahto abandoned her at ISBT bus stand and fled.

Following the complaint, the police registered a missing person’s report and launched an investigation. On March 3, Thanesar Sadar SHO Baljeet Singh led a team including ASI Paramjit Singh and constable Karambir Singh, arrested Lalit Mahto for the murder of his daughter.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to killing his daughter by throwing her into the Bhakra-Narwana Canal. The police are continuing their investigation to gather further evidence in the case.

The police spokesperson said that the accused used to have routine family disputes, which is suspected to be the reason behind the murder.
