Farmers protest in Uchana ahead of CM Saini’s visit over water, devp demands

Jind: Ahead of Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini's scheduled visit to Uchana Kalan in Jind district on April 20, farmers from over 20 villages staged a day-long protest to press for their long-pending demands.Agitating for years to demand water supply for irrigation, the farmers alleged that successive govts have failed to address the issue, despite tall promises from prominent leaders, including former deputy CM Dushyant Chautala — who represented this constituency in 2019 — and former Union minister Birender Singh.They claimed that due to the lack of water supply, they have been suffering repeated crop losses. Despite raising the issue several times, they say no concrete steps were taken to resolve the crisis.During the protest, the Samyukt Kisan Mazdoor Morcha submitted a memorandum to local BJP MLA Devender Chaturbhuj Atri. The organisation's president, Azad Singh Palwa, said, "We are demanding the release of water from a canal passing through Dhakal village. Farmers are in distress, and our demands need immediate attention."Besides water issue, the farmers also demanded the construction of a govt college and the development of a park in the area. They requested a meeting with CM Nayab Singh Saini during his upcoming visit to Uchana Kalan, which coincides with the birth anniversary celebrations of Bhagat Dhanna, also known as Saint Dhanna or Dhanna Jat.MLA Devender Atri assured the farmers that he would present their demands to the CM. He said, as a farmer's son himself, he deeply understands their problems. Atri also mentioned that he already raised the issue of the minor canal, which branches from the main canal passing through Dhakal village, in the state assembly.The protest saw participation from several farmers, including Bira from Karsindhu, Jodha from Sedha Majra, Jangeer Palwan, Mia Singh, Ujala, Ved Prakash Sharma, and Dheera.
