Farm input dealers protest in Jind against amendments to seed act
Jind: Miffed over the new provisions in the Insecticides (Haryana Amendment) Act, 2025, seeds and insecticides dealers are on a 7-day strike in the state, demanding cancellation or amendment to the new act. While holding a protest in Jind on Monday, pesticides, fertilisers, and seeds dealers said the law introduced by the govt is completely anti-business. They said the traders would not tolerate the law, which was enacted through a dictatorial decision by the govt. The state vice-president of the Seed Pesticide Dealers Association, Pawan Garg, said there are approximately 1,500 dealers in Jind district. The state govt amended the laws to include severe provisions for penalties and imprisonment, which are not in the interest of traders or farmers. These laws were passed without considering the objections of seed producers, pesticide manufacturers, and sellers, he said. In Haryana, seeds are produced in compliance with all laws, ensuring their quality and certification, said Garg. The new provisions make offences under the act non-bailable and cognisable, which is a matter of concern, he said, adding that legal action should be taken against those who engage in illegal activities, but it is not right for innocent people to be punished. Therefore, the state govt is being urged to completely revoke the new act. A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the deputy Speaker of the assembly, Krishan Lal Middha, on April 4, and further action would be taken soon, he said.Farmers hail decisionHowever, farmers welcomed the move of the govt. Farmer leader Azad Palwan said the new Seed and Pesticide Act introduced by the state govt is a commendable decision. He said the decision would ensure supply of genuine seeds to the farmers, leading to better yields. "If the seeds are authentic, no one should face any issues. The new act is precise and is in the best interest of the farmers. With the implementation of this act, farmers will be relieved from fake and adulterated seeds. The farmers completely support this decision," he added. MSID:: 120067624 413 |
