CHANDIGARH: Around 100 families residing in a scrap pickers’ colony at Makhanmajra village in Chandigarh are facing problem due to non-availability of food and milk amid the in lockdown.


Most of the people living in the colony are rickshawpullers or daily wagers.

Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Kabadi Colony, who works as a plumber in the city, said since the lockdown, he had not been able to feed his children and nobody is helping them.

“The ration is finished and we are begging for flour and rice from our neighbours. If the

administration

does not arrange food, we will not die of Covid-19, but of starvation,” he said.

Ram Narayan, a rickshaw puller, said, “I have four children. I used to earlier earn around Rs 400 to Rs 500 per day through rickshaw pulling, but after the lockdown, I am not being able to earn a single penny.”

He said his children did not have milk for the last three days. “I request the UT administration to arrange for milk and vegetables for my children and wife as well as other residents of the colony,” he added.

The police had assured that the issue would be raised before the officials of the UT administration. Residents of the colony also requested the NGOs and gurdwaras to come forward and provide milk and food for them and their children.
