<div class="section1"><div class="Normal">HISAR: The 3-day annual conference of the Environmental Mutagen Society of India began at Haryana Agricultural University here on Thursday with participation of over one hundred geneticists and farm scientists from all over India. <br /><br />The participants will deliberate on various issues responsible for pollution of environment and draft a strategy to combat the problem during a symposium on environmental pollution: genetic risk and impact on global health being simultaneously being held on the occasion.<br /><br />Inaugurating the conference, Haryana Agricultural University Vice Chancellor, Mr M K Miglani sought participants'' immediate intervention for providing a long-term solution to the menace of environmental pollution.<br /><br />The Vice-Chancellor said that pollution was not affecting human beings alone but the whole planet earth.

He said that industrialization and other advancements were in fact great developments but they instead of becoming an instrument of prosperity and human health had led to physically sick and degenerate society.<br /><br />Mr Miglani said that on Thursday the country had surplus foodgrains yet a large section of society was suffering from malnutrition and pollution related ailments.<br /><br />Expressing concern over injudicious use of agro-chemicals in agriculture he urged the participants to develop eco-friendly farming techniques. He said that such technology was all the more essential as agriculture sector had no checks as being imposed on industrial and transport sectors.<br /><br />Presiding over, Industrial Toxicology Research Centre''s former Director, Dr P K Seth called for involving young generation in the endeavours being made for creating awareness towards environment pollution. <br /><br />He said that the major cause of the menace of pollution was inadequate information and mismanagement of natural resources by the public. HAU Director of Research, Dr B S Dahiya drew attention of the farm experts towards the damage being caused to the soil microflora by the agro-chemicals. <br /><br />College of Basic Sciences Dean, Dr R C Sihag, the host Department of Genetics Head, Dr R P Saharan and the Chairman of Organising Committee, Dr P K Sareen also spoke. <br /><br />Dr Sareen was also felicitated for his significant contributions as scientist.
