MOHALI: BSF constable Anil Kumar was already suspended and facing an internal inquiry at the time of his arrest by Mohali police from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan on January 8. He was held for aiding a gang of smugglers in bringing in drugs and weapons into India from Pakistan through the international border. BSF senior officials from New Delhi and Rajasthan confirmed that constable Anil Kumar of 52nd Battalion was suspended.
His role in cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons was also being probed.
Officials said that Kumar was posted along the international border in Ganganagar in Rajasthan for over two years. An inquiry was ordered against him following intelligence inputs hinting at his role.
Sources in the BSF said that the departmental inquiry had been completed in which it was established that he was involved in aiding smuggling across the border. It has also come out in the inquiry that around Rs 80,000 was transferred in his wife's account from a Pakistan bank account, sources said.
Mohali police approached BSF about Anil Kumar, whose name cropped up during the interrogation of gangster Gurjant Singh. The BSF decided to hand him over to Mohali police CIA wing for further interrogation as inquiry against him by the paramilitary force was complete.
Mohali police sources said that Anil had made over 70 calls to Imtiyaaz, a Pakistani drug smuggler, in the span of over one month. The cellphone he used to send whatsapp messages to his Pakistani link was still in the custody of BSF in Rajasthan.
