Drug smuggling: Role of cops to be examined, HC told

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Thursday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that apart from dismissed police officer Raj Jit Singh, the role of all concerned police officers who may have directly or indirectly helped in drug trafficking/smuggling will be examined. The court was informed that ADGP R K Jaiswal shall be the investigating officer of the FIR in which dismissed PPS officer Raj Jit was booked recently.These assertions were made in a status report filed by Punjab bureau of investigation AIG (litigation) Sarabjit Singh to the HC. The report, giving the status of action taken on reports submitted to the HC by three SITs on January 30, 2018, March 14, 2018, and May 8, 2018, has been submitted by the Punjab government in pursuance to the March 28 order, in which the HC had ordered to open all the three sealed cover reports submitted on the drug haul case by the three-member SIT of Punjab Police.The HC has been informed that on April 17, the department of home affairs and justice, Punjab, had directed the DGP to take action on the sealed cover reports. Accordingly, the DGP directed special DGP, STF Mohali, to nominate Raj Jit as an accused under Section 120-B in the FIR No 1 registered under NDPS Act on June 12, 2017, in Mohali against Inderjit Singh. “ADGP R K Jaiswal shall be investigating officer of the said FIR. While conducting the investigation, all three SIT reports shall be taken into account... and the probe will be concluded within a month,” the HC was informed.The court was also informed that an extradition process has been initiated against the accused persons in other pending FIRs related to drug cases. These accused include Amarjit Singh Kooner, Lehmbar Singh Daleh, Pardeep Singh Dhaliwal, Amrinder Singh Chheena alias Laddi Chheena, Parminder Singh Deo alias Pindi, Sarabjit Singh Sander, Nirankar Singh Dhillon, Gursewak Singh Dhillon, Ranjit Singh Aujla, Ranjit Kaur Kahlon alias Rani, Madan Lal and Harbans Singh Sidhu.In a separate report submitted by Amritsar airport ACP Kamaljit Singh, the HC was also apprised about the status of the investigation into the suicide case of Inderpreet Singh Chadha. A copy of the challan in the case was also produced with the report and the court informed a questionnaire was also sent to former DGP S Chattopadhyaya in this case, but he had sought time to respond. The HC was also informed that the investigation in the said FIR qua Chattopadhyaya had been stayed by the court on April 6, 2018.
