Dog-bite cases rising, says Bittu
Times News NetworkChandigarh: The executive meeting of Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (Foswac), which was held on Sunday, was attended by 114 representatives of various associations to discuss issues faced by city residents. Foswac chairman Baljinder Singh Bittu expressed concern over the stray dog menace and increasing number of dog bite cases. He said that residents, especially senior citizens and children were scared to step out of their houses due to the stray dogs.He also flagged the recurring issue of the Dadumajra garbage dump. “City residents have started believing that this garbage dump will never go because it has become a source of regular funding for the corporation,” he said. Bittu also alleged that money was charged illegally to let vendors operate.Shikha Nijahwan, president, Sector 27 RWA said that hygiene was a problem in the sector and people were even getting contaminated water supply. She said that residents had to throw many buckets of muddy water to get drinkable water.K L Aggarwal, president, RWA sector 13, independent houses said that the UT administration and the MC had not responded to representations made by their association. Col (retd) Gursewak Singh, president, RWA MHC, Sector 13 said that two roads passing through their sector had been dug up for a long time but repair work had not been completed. Consequently, he said, the area was flooded during the rainy season.Pankaj Gupta from Sector 36(W) complained that payments for maintenance of neighbourhood parks by RWAs were not being released for months together and several deductions had been “unnecessarily” made by the MC. Gupta added that RWAs were doing this work at nominal rates of Rs 4 per square metre against the MC expenses of more than Rs 10 per square metre for the same job.Prof A S Bhatia from Sector 21 said that lights in the parks remained switched on during the day, causing wastage of power.Department of environment, Chandigarh administration, led by scientist Dr Brij Bhushan and his team delivered a presentation on popularisation of EVs (electrical vehicles) to achieve zero omission of carbon print.
