Chandigarh: To raise awareness about the rare bleeding disorder,
haemophilia
among people and to bring problems faced by people with hemophilia to the attention of health policy makers – The
Haemophilic Welfare Society
(THWS), Chandigarh observed World Hemophilia Day (WHD) on Sunday.
Delegates from various departments of
PGIMER
and
Government Medical College and Hospital
, Sector 32 participated in the event. There was representation from departments like paediatrics, clinical hematology, pathology, physiotherapy, orthopaedics, blood and transfusion medicine.
Sensitising people about Hemophilia, Dr Deepak Bansal of the department of haematology-oncology Advanced Paediatric Centre , PGIMER said, “Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder caused by the absence of certain proteins called clotting factors VIII and IX in the blood. When a person with haemophilia suffers an injury, they bleed profusely for a longer period than others due to lack of clotting factors in the blood.”
THWS members underlined the fact that people with the condition needed special attention in OPDs at PGIMER. tnn
