Discarded vehicles gutted at scrap workshop

Bathinda: Over a dozen discarded vehicles were gutted in a fire at a scrap dealer's workshop near Buggipura Chowk in Moga on Saturday. Police said a vehicle was being cut using a gas cutter when sparks allegedly triggered the blaze, which spread rapidly due to strong winds.Several fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the fire under control. Vehicular traffic in the area was temporarily diverted to prevent the flames from spreading further. Officials said the presence of inflammable material or residual diesel in the scrapped vehicles may have added to the intensity of the fire.Workshop owner Surinder Singh denied that the fire originated from gas-cutting activity, claiming the exact cause was yet to be ascertained and suggesting that sparking from high-voltage wires running above the workshop could have caused it.Fireman Jagtar Singh said the fire brigade responded promptly after receiving an alert from Buggipura Chowk and managed to control the blaze after sustained efforts.
