Digvijay faces FIR over GJUST violence, 6 held
Hisar: Police have booked eight persons, including Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) youth leader Digvijay Singh Chautala and Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) state president Deepak Malik, in connection with a violent protest at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST). Six accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while the remaining are yet to be taken into custody. A bail hearing in the case is scheduled for Saturday.According to police, the case was registered on a complaint filed by university proctor Anil Kumar. Besides Digvijay Chautala and Deepak Malik, those named include Harinder Beniwal, Harikesh Dhanda, Jitendra Sheoran, Ajju Ghanghas, Ashish Kundu and Rohit Soni, among others. Charges include obstructing govt work and damaging public property. The complaint alleges that the accused forcibly entered the university campus around 12:15 pm on Thursday, disrupting academic activities. They allegedly turned violent outside the vice-chancellor's office, damaged property and attempted to break open the main gate, creating panic among staff. Police have arrested six individuals — Jitendra Sheoran (Sector 9-11), Vijendra (Agroha), Gaurav (Vijay Nagar), Tarun Goyal (Preeti Nagar), Deepak (Surya Nagar) and Ravindra Kumar alias Ravi Ahuja (Multani Chowk).Meanwhile, JJP workers staged a protest in the city on Friday. Dushyant Chautala and Digvijay Chautala reached the Hisar City police station along with supporters, demanding the release of the arrested youth. Despite presenting themselves, police did not detain them. Allegations against CIA in-charge, probe orderedJJP spokesperson Mandeep Bishnoi alleged that a CIA in-charge attempted to ram his vehicle into the convoy of Dushyant and Digvijay Chautala near Sabzi Mandi Railway overbridge. He further claimed the officer brandished a pistol before fleeing the spot. Superintendent of police (SP) Siddhant Jain said a complaint has been received and an inquiry has been initiated. Action will be taken as per rules, he added. Dushyant alleges police misconductDushyant Chautala criticised the police action, alleging it was influenced by the chief minister's office. He claimed that although the protest caused limited damage — "only a few flower pots" — police conducted late-night raids and picked up students from their homes. He further alleged misconduct during the raids, including searches carried out in the absence of women police personnel. The party is considering legal action over the issue. Calling the protest democratic, he said JJP's student wing had gathered to oppose the functioning of the vice-chancellor. He accused the govt led by Nayab Singh Saini of attempting to suppress dissent. Section 163 imposed to maintain orderIn view of the tension, district magistrate-cum-deputy commissioner Mahendra Pal has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, across the district. Officials said intelligence inputs suggested that JJP youth and other student groups could attempt to march towards sensitive locations, including the university, Mini Secretariat and police stations, raising concerns over law and order and traffic disruption.
