Dhaki row: Punjab rejects CBI probe

CHANDIGARH: Despite the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) recommendation for a CBI probe into the Dhaki Sahib violence, the state government has told the commission that has no intention of holding an inquiry by the central agency.

the letter, signed by state home department's secretary, was in response to the rights panel's recommendation for cbi probe into the incident, in which several hutments, religious books and property within the dhaki sahib complex was destroyed by an armed mob on december 2, 1999. after taking cognizance of the incident, the rights panel had reported in its findings that a 150-strong mob, which attacked the 'dera' near khanna in ludhiana district, was allegedly led by amarjit kaur, sister of punjab cabinet minister jagdish singh garcha. all this continued in the presence of police, the commission stated in its findings. pshrc findings said followers of sant baba darshan singh of dhaki sahib dera were illegally detained and tortured in custody at payal police station .
