DC, SP review flood threat along Yamuna River; appeal for public caution
YAMUNANAGAR: The district administrative officers on Tuesday conducted a joint inspection of several flood-prone areas along the Yamuna river, including Hathnikund Barrage, Kalesar, Banjara Bans, Lakadmay Pratappur, Nawazpur, and Mali Majra villages, to review the situation caused by soil erosion along the riverbanks. Yamunanagar DC Parth Gupta and SP Kamaldeep Goyal together visited these areas.
During the visit, officials informed that a protective stud at Kalesar-Banjara Bans had been damaged due to heavy water flow in the Yamuna. Repair work is already underway by the irrigation department. DC Gupta directed officials to ensure adequate preventive measures against soil erosion, including placement of sandbags to control water flow and minimize damage. He noted that the river currently carries an average flow of around 1.5 lakh cusecs.
Appealing to residents, Gupta urged villagers not to venture near the Yamuna, its canals, or other rivers to avoid any risk. “The district administration is conducting continuous awareness campaigns across all villages. Our teams are working round-the-clock on flood protection measures. There is no need to panic, but people must cooperate to ensure timely completion of safety works,” he said. He also advised farmers whose crops or land had been damaged due to rains to upload details on the compensation portal by September 10 to claim government relief.
SP Kamaldeep Goyal said that additional police forces have been deployed across the district in view of the heavy rainfall. “Traffic movement is under strict watch, and SHOs and outpost in-charges have been directed to maintain 24/7 vigilance. Police teams are also spreading awareness in riverside villages and ensuring public safety,” he added.
The visit was also attended by SDM Chhachhrauli Rohit Kumar, Irrigation Department Executive Engineer Vijay Garg, DIPRO Dr. Manoj Kumar, BDPO Karthik Chauhan, Naib Tehsildar Anand Rawal, local panchayat representatives, and other officials.
