MOHALI: After traffic marshals, crime marshals would soon patrol Mohali streets to curb crime. Police authorities have already discussed the proposal with ex-servicemen who would be deployed as crime marshals.
Banking upon the success of traffic marshal scheme, Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the proposal of crime marshals was in the pipeline as it was felt that they would help in tackling crime incidents.
As Mohali witnessed a surge in crime incidents - vehicle thefts, house burglaries, goods stolen from inside vehicles in parking lots - residents suffered from a sense of insecurity. Hence, the move was also being seen as a step to restore the confidence of residents back in policing, sources said.
Asserting that the basic objective was to provide safety to citizens, Bhullar added, It would also ensure that even the cops do their duty properly. We feel that crime marshals would help and assist cops to guarantee better police administration.
Lauding the step, Lt Col (retd) SS Sohi said it would give former soldiers an opportunity to serve the society again. Ex-servicemen can utilize their army training in fighting against crime and criminals, he added.
