Councillor's husband makes MSS a money machine?
CHANDIGARH: Even after the introduction of Mohalla Sudhar Samiti (MSS), the Municipal Corporation (MC) has not managed to ensure minimum wages for the safai karamcharis in Ram Darbar. Eyebrows are being raised at the fact that the area councillor''s husband Banarasi Dass is holding the purse strings of the samiti as the cashier.
With councillors within the Congress camp alleging that the couple are making over Rs 40,000 per month, demands from other wards to initiate Mohalla Sudhar Samiti in their areas have started pouring in.

MC officials concede that the councillors are viewing the implementation of MSS as a good money-making proposition. Add to it the latest communication from the councillor to the MC that the MC will not be allowed to audit the finances of the MSS.
With much ado the MC had initiated the MSS to provide at least the minimum wages to the safai karamcharis who were not getting more than Rs 1,500 from the private contractors.
While the MC''s share of Rs 1,500 towards the contribution to monthly packet is being given to safai karamcharis but there is no transparency in the door-to-door collections being done by the MSS.
Safai karamcharis in Ram Darbar told Times News Network that they continue to get just Rs 1,500 per month for more than 10 hours of labour every day. Banarasi Dass, Kamlesh''s husband and cashier of MSS says, "The MC has given its share of Rs 51,000 as contribution towards salary of safai karamcharis. The number of karamcharis employed are more than specified. MSS as of now is running into losses and we are paying from our pocket."
