NAYAGAON: Jaspal Kaur's case reflects the plight of a woman married to an alcoholic. It's been seven years since she married Gurcharan, a Nayagaon resident and an alcoholic. For years, she has been a victim of harassment and physical assault just because her husband happened to have no say in family affairs. The family, it is believed, has recently risen from penury to riches due to a boom in real estate.
Now for days, 27-year-old Jaspal Kaur has been doing the rounds of the police station, Mohali, to register a complaint against her in-laws and husband for physically assaulting her and demanding dowry, but to no avail. First, the police at Nayagaon and now, the women's cell at Mohali have been harassing an already harassed woman. They have been asking her for documents, proof, sending her all over the place. But, they have not registered a compliant. "Why does the police make us run around for documents? Why don't they investigate for themselves? It was not possible for me to bring along proofs given the situation that I left the house in," says Jaspal. Ever since she was married, alleges Jaspal, she has been harassed by persistent demands for dowry besides being subjected to mental and physical torture. But things worsened on June 9 when Jaspal's mother from Morinda came to look up her ailing daughter. "When my mother came to see me, once again the demand from my in-laws for a motorbike and a refrigerator came up," says Jagtar, her brother. Arguments heated up and led to her father-in- law, Ujagar Singh, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law physically assaulting her. "When my mother and sister-in-law intervened, they were also showered with fists," says Jaspal, bursting into tears.
