CHANDIGARH: A Punjab Police constable received a gunshot wound from his AK-47 rifle under mysterious circumstances in a room of a hotel in Sector 22 in the early hours of Wednesday.

The injured is Deepak Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur.


Deepak and another cop Ankit checked into hotel ‘Diamond Plaza’ around 1 am on Wednesday, a staff member said. Both were deployed as personal security officers of a Gurdaspur-based property dealer. They had accompanied him to the city. The businessman was staying in a hotel in Sector 35. At the Sector 22 hotel, a loud sound was heard from the room of Deepak at 5.30 am, said

Ram Das, an employee, who first thought someone had thrown stones from outside. Later, he heard screams from the room. When staff entered inside, they found Deepak lying in a pool of blood near the washroom. They informed the police. Deepak was admitted to PGI. Surprisingly, the second cop was sleeping. The bullet hit Deepak in his abdomen. It also damaged a mirror at reception area as the bullet pierced the wall of the room.

UT SSP, DSP, central division, and Sector 17 police reached the spot. Police recovered Deepak’s rifle and a bullet shell. A forensic team collected evidence for investigation.

Police said preliminary investigation suggested the bullet was fired accidentally. But they were also probing whether the cop tried to commit suicide and other angles. Police said they would register an FIR after an investigation.
