Cop sentenced to 4-yr rigorous imprisonment for graft

Hisar: A local court here has sentenced a crime branch sub-inspector to four years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000.The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the sub-inspector.
The conviction was pronounced by the court of Additional Sessions Judge Khatri Saurabh against sub-inspector Bijendra Singh, who was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) while accepting the bribe over four years ago.According to prosecution records, the ACB registered a case against the accused officer on June 29, 2021, following a complaint by Dharampal, a resident of Kahanewala village in Mansa district of Punjab.In his complaint, Dharampal stated that a case of fraud was registered against Dheeraj Kumar of Sardulgarh village in Mansa district and he was arrested by the police. During the investigation, SI Bijendra Singh allegedly summoned Vijay Kumar, a labourer working on Dharampal's farm, to Hisar for questioning.The complainant alleged that the officer threatened to implicate Vijay Kumar in the case unless Rs 2 lakh was paid. The amount was later negotiated at Rs 1 lakh. Fearing legal trouble, Dharampal reportedly sold his wife's jewellery for Rs 37,700 and arranged part of the money, but the officer continued to demand Rs 50,000 more.Subsequently, Dharampal approached the ACB which laid a trap and caught the accused sub-inspector red-handed while accepting Rs 40,000 as a bribe.Following the trial, the court found the officer guilty and sentenced him to four years in prison, along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.MSID:: 128718988 413 |
