Dhandra Road

on Thursday morning. The accident happened when head

constable Baljeet Singh

was cleaning the weapon.

He was taken to a private hospital by his colleagues.

Baljeet Singh and head

constable Lakhvir Singh

, attached with the PCR, were on night patrolling duty in Dugri area. Around 5am, they stopped on Dhandra road. When Lakhvir Singh had gone to the washroom, Baljeet Singh started cleaning his service weapon, a carbine. While cleaning it, he pulled the trigger accidentally and two bullets pierced his body.

On hearing the shot, Lakhvir Singh rushed towards him and found Baljeet in a pool of blood. Lakhvir immediately sounded the Dugri police and within a few minutes, he was rushed to Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Civil Lines. Bullets have been removed and Baljeet is said to be stable.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP)

Dhurman Nimbale

said, “The head constable had a carbine which can fire in quick succession. While cleaning it, he accidently fired two bullets that pierced his stomach.”

When asked about rules of cleaning service weapons, the DCP said, “Yes, there is a rule which says a service weapon should be cleaned in a safe environment. Cops cannot clean it anywhere or in any open area.”

“However, since the head constable is unconscious; he is unable to give a statement. Once he gains consciousness, he would be questioned on the matter. And if found guilty, action might be taken against him for negligence,” added the DCP.
