Cop ends life, father-in-law held
MOHALI: In a shocking incident, an inspector in the Punjab Police, Parminder Singh Dhillon (40), committed suicide after allegedly facing harassment at the hands of his wife and in-laws. A case under section 306 IPC (abetment of suicide) was registered against Dhillon's wife Harpreet Kaur, father-in-law Avtar Singh Sahota and mother-in-law Sital Kaur. The police arrested Sahota late Monday evening. The inspector's body was found near the Mohali railway station on Monday. Dhillon, who reportedly consumed a poisonous substance, was posted in the flying squad division of the vigilance department. A suicide note was found near the body.
Dhillon is survived by his wife, two daughters - who study at a private school in Chandigarh - and a two-and-a-half-year-old son. Earlier, he had also been posted at police stations in Kurali, Mullanpur, phase XI and other wings of the police.
'' Parminder was being harassed by his wife and father in-law ,'' said Varinder Pal Singh, SP (City), Mohali, adding it was a case of suicide. Ever since his marriage in 1995, Dhillon had been living with his in-laws at their phase-XI residence. His wife is a teacher at a government school in phase-VII .
The deceased inspector's father-in-law claimed, "I had literally adopted Parminder after he married my daughter and he had been living with us. After his posting at the vigilance department, Parminder used to consume alcohol everyday. He was inebriated on Sunday too.'' Sahota said he entered into a scuffle with Dhillon on Sunday afternoon after the latter asked for his car keys. '' As he was drunk, I refused,'' he added. '' He left the house around 1pm and did not return. I lodged a complaint with the police regarding the fight the same day. We came to know about his death on Monday morning,'' he claimed.
The dead inspector's colleagues said he was gentle and a humble person and had never done anything wrong. His relatives said Dhillon had been upset for many days and had talked to his uncle about it on Sunday.
Shocked by his son's death, the deceased's father, Preetam Singh, who lives in Pharuna village of Samrala district, could not say anything.
The body was sent to the civil hospital in phase VI for post-mortem.
