KARNAL: District Congress leaders and party workers staged a protest at the Karnal railway station on Monday to protest against the hike in train fares and demanded a rollback.
The protest was led by chief parliamentary secretary Ram Kishan Gujjar, who said the Centre's decision would lead to rise in prices of essential commodities. MLA Sumita Singh also criticized the government for burdening the common man.
The protesters submitted a memorandum to the station master.
On June 20, the Union railway ministry had raised the passenger fares by 14.2% for all classes and freight charges by 6.5%. The new passenger fares and freight charges will come into effect from June 25.
