CHANDIGARH: Colours of folk art of various states were brought alive on Thursday morning as students from 12 schools created traditional rangolis at St John's School in Sector 26.
The varied heritage of states like West Bengal, Kerala, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Punjab and others was brought out through colours, petals and diyas in the form of rangolis. Students used eco-friendly material as they unleashed their creativity.
While Bhavan Vidyalaya students were busy creating an alpana, students of Sacred Heart, all dressed in white zardozi-lined sarees, created floral Athapookalam designs, typical of Kerala.
The inter-school folk rangoli and heritage tree contest was organized by the school's heritage club, Sampada, to celebrate World Heritage Day.
For the 'heritage tree' part of the contest, students presented skits and presentations on how to conserve the country's heritage trees like neem and triveni, among others. Apart from their medicinal and ecological value, these trees have a place in Indian mythology as well.
This competition was an attempt to revive the culture of the country. In keeping with the same thought, certificates presented to the participants were also hand-made.
The first two prizes in the 'Heritage Tree Presentation' went to Mount Carmel and Carmel Convent, respectively, and for the rangoli competition the top two slots went to St Kabir Public School and Delhi Public School, respectively.
Besides the host school, the participants included St Kabir Public School, Bhavan Vidyalaya (Panchkula and Chandigarh), Sacred Heart, Carmel Convent, AKSIPS of sectors 41 and 45, Hansraj Public School, Delhi Public School, The Gurukul (Panchkula) and Mount Carmel.
