CM reviews progress of key hydro project in Kinnaur

Shimla: Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the 450-megawatt (MW) Shongtong-Karcham Hydroelectric Project on the Satluj River during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district. Sukhu inspected key components of the project, including the powerhouse, surge shaft and barrage, and interacted with engineers and workers on-site. Once completed, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,579 million units of electricity annually, significantly strengthening the state's energy capacity and grid stability. It is also projected to contribute nearly Rs 900 crore annually to the hill state's economy.The chief minister directed officials to accelerate construction and ensure the completion of the first phase by Jan 2027, with the entire project targeted for completion within the current financial year. He stated that around 75% of the work has been completed. Major civil structures, including the barrage, head race tunnel and powerhouse, are at advanced stages, while electro-mechanical works are progressing in a phased manner. Fruit drying unit The chief minister also inspected the world's first geothermal-powered apple cold storage and fruit drying unit at Tapari in Kinnaur district. Developed under an MoU between Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation and an Iceland-based company, the 1,000-tonne facility has processed 16,963 kg of fruits in two years. Sukhu said the project uses geothermal heat instead of electricity, offering sustainable support to farmers and setting a new benchmark in eco-friendly agricultural practices in the region.
