Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday announced that the state govt would launch a state-wide campaign against the chitta (heroin) menace from Nov 15 with the aim to completely eradicate it.Presiding over a meeting, Sukhu said the three-month-long multi-level campaign would begin with an "Anti-Chitta Rally" in Shimla, from the Ridge to Chaura Maidan on Nov 15. The MLAs, dignitaries, students, and citizens from all walks of life are expected to participate.Sukhu emphasised that the campaign would involve coordinated efforts by the govt departments, the police, volunteers, and educational institutions. The chief minister will personally monitor progress at the state level. The initiative will focus not only on enforcement but also on drug prevention awareness across districts and sub-divisions.To strengthen action against drug trafficking, a special police cell will be created, and panchayats most affected by ‘chitta' have already been identified. The govt will train anti-chitta volunteers in colleges and develop a comprehensive police strategy for effective implementation, said the CM.At the grassroots level, drug prevention committees will be set up in every panchayat, each comprising seven members, including a chairperson. These committees will meet monthly, prepare detailed reports on drug-related activities, and coordinate with law enforcement agencies and deputy commissioners. They will also conduct awareness programmes in schools and public places to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse.Sukhu said these committees would play a crucial role in curbing illegal drug trade and strengthening community-based prevention efforts.MSID:: 125016071 413 |
