“In addition, the families would also be entitled for the post-retirement benefits including full pension, gratuity and other benefits,” he said. Gill, too, announced Rs 5 lakh each for the victims’ families.
Sukhwant Singh, a resident of Ratarwan, had spotted the militants coming to the village around 5 am and informed the police. As cops swung into action, the militants lobbed hand grenades at them, killing two on the spot and injuring four others. Police had launched combing operations the night before, after a couple — Des Raj and his wife Soma Devi — had informed Naror Jaimal Singh police station about two suspected Pakistan militants enquiring about a road leading to Narot Jaimal Singh. Over 350 cops had been patrolling the area ever since.
In Amritsar, the Border Security Force (BSF) admitted to the infiltration Sunday. DIG, BSF, Jagir Singh told TOI, “We suspect these (militants killed Ratarwan) are the people who... sneaked in during the exchange of fire between BSF and Pakistan Rangers in Bhamial and Simbal sectors on April 19.” Admitting to the need to plug certain gaps along the international border, he added, “There’s the Ujh river, Tarna and Sarp nullahs besides other tributaries which provide ample scope for infiltration.”
Security forces suspect that at least five militants sneaked into the Indian territory .DGP Gill said efforts were on to track three other militants who are still hiding in the area.
Meanwhile, Satnam Singh and Phumman Singh, gunmen and driver of DSP Garib Das, Gurdaspur, who sustained bullet injuries during the encounter with terrorists, have been admitted at a private hospital in Amritsar. There condition is stated to be stable.
