PANCHKULA: For Class XI, Panchkula students are thronging Chandigarh-based schools, leaving behind even the popular ones in Panchkula. The reason being 85% quota fixed for students who have done their +2 from Chandigarh-based schools for admission in colleges of Chandigarh. Those who have done their +2 from schools outside Chandigarh get only 15% seats to fight for when taking admission in Chandigarh-based colleges.
Studying classes XI and XII in Chandigarh helps students get rid of the “outsider” tag when they join a Chandigarh college. It also helps students with much lower marks compared to a Panchkula student getting admission because of the UT quota.
“Last year, despite scoring 93% in her Class XII, my daughter did not get admission to under-graduate courses in any of the Chandigarh colleges because she had passed her Class XII from a Panchkula school,” says Sector 10 resident from Panchkula Charu Sharma.
She adds, “I fail to understand this disparity as children’s education suffers due to this rule. I will have to get my younger daughter admitted to a Chandigarh school from Class XI.” Principals of Panchkula schools had demanded to implement the “NCR” administration way but nothing was done in this regard.
Principal of Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Jaya Bhardwaj says despite scoring outstanding marks, several students from their school don’t get a seat in Chandigarh colleges. “We requested numerous times to implement the NCR method, but all our requests went in vain.”
“This raw and unfair deal is discouraging the bright kids of Panchkula,” says principal of Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, Panchkula, Sandeep Sardana.
“My sister’s friend got admission in a Chandigarh college with just 55% in Class XII but my sister couldn’t make it despite scoring 90%. It is better to take admission in a Chandigarh school, no matter how good or bad it is,” says Radhika Abrol, a Sector-16 resident in Panchkula.
