Chanot village water crisis protest enters Day 24; Deepender Hooda backs villagers
Hisar: The 24-day-long agitation by residents of Hansi's Chanot village and nearby areas over a drinking water crisis gained momentum after Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda visited the protest site and backed the demand for a permanent solution.Addressing the gathering, Deepender termed the villagers' demands "justified" and said access to clean drinking water is a fundamental right that should be ensured without discrimination. He questioned how the issue could remain unresolved for more than a decade despite repeated demands from residents. The protesters are seeking a connection to the 36-inch pipeline currently being laid for Hansi city's water supply, arguing that nearby villages should also benefit from the project. Villagers further alleged that the proposed water treatment plant at Chanot Water Works remains dysfunctional, forcing residents to rely on inadequate and often contaminated water sources. The MP said the issue should not be seen through an urban-rural divide, stressing that every citizen deserves equal access to drinking water. He warned that if the govt failed to act, the matter would be raised in Parliament and the Haryana assembly.
The drinking water dispute has become a major concern for residents of the affected villages, who claim they have been facing acute shortages and irregular supply for years despite repeated representations to authorities.Caption of photo: MP Deepender Hooda addressing the dharna at Chanot village.
